Affiliate Confession Gets A Sweet Page Rank Update

The search engine gods, or at least the minor deities, that reside at Google have seen fit to throw a little page rank boost my way in the latest update. I first read about a page rank update being in progress yesterday on John Chow’s blog, but didn’t see anything happening my way until first thing this morning.

After starting this blog on November 1, 2007 and posting at least 1 entry every day since November 21st apparently the hard work has paid off. I can’t remember when I first got a page rank, but it was a measly 1 and stayed that way for several months. However, Google now has boosted Affiliate Confession to a PR 3.

Thanks goes out to everyone who reads and links to an interesting article here at this blog. I am immensely grateful for that. You were all part of helping to receive a better page rank here.

Of course the big question now is, does it even matter? If I get more organic search engine traffic from Google that’s the result that would make a difference. Whatever the result I will continue to blog consistently on programs, news, goofy stuff and ways to make money in affiliate marketing.

Thanks Google for a little more green in the bar up top there, now please send more traffic my way.

Jason Calacanis, Please Help Me Become A Pathetic Affiliate Marketer

I’m hoping Jason Calacanis can help me out here. Everyone knows that Jason loves to stir up trouble at Internet conferences and he recently caused quite a stir at Affiliate Summit West a couple months ago when he referred to Zac Johnson’s $300,000 check from Yahoo as pathetic.

Well Jason, here’s where you can help me out. I just received an extremely pathetic check of $1,309.21 from Google Adsense yesterday and I’m hoping you will embarrass me (and of course generate lots of publicity for me) at the next Internet related conference you attend by displaying the picture below of me holding that extremely pathetic check. What I’m trying to accomplish is rising from the ranks of extremely pathetic to just pathetic. I mean, if Zac can earn $300,000 in a month’s time from Yahoo Search Marketing and only be at the pathetic level, well, I’d darn sure like to be there.

Anyway Jason, here’s my pic and I’m hopin’ you think of me next time you speak somewhere. I need the publicity so I can afford to fix my teeth.

The Adsense Redneck Needs New Teeth

Thanks Jason. If you need one, I can send you a pic suitable for framing.

eBay Affiliate Panic Subsides As EPN Switch Is Extended

eBay Affiliates No Loger RiotingUtter panic, rioting, confusion and general mayhem in the streets has subsided with the recent announcement that eBay affiliates will be given till the end of May to change all their links and completely migrate over to the new eBay Partner Network. eBay announced last month that they would be leaving Commission Junction to manage their affiliate program in house and initially gave affiliates only 30 days make the switch.

I’m sure multitudes of eBay affiliates are breathing a sigh of relief today knowing that they don’t have to cram in possibly weeks worth of work in the next 3 days. I was looking at a very busy 3 day stretch here because I have one site in particular that still has some 60 pages of rss feeds that need to be changed. And other affiliates have huge sites or networks of sites with tens of thousands of links that still need to be converted.

eBay made the announcement about the migration extension on their blog on April 25. Stated in the post was eBay’s admission that only 66% of their affiliates had made the switch to EPN thus far, leaving another 33% lagging behind. It was definitely a smart move on eBay’s part to extend the deadline because 33% of their traffic from affiliates may not have reached the correct destination making for a possible combination of lost revenue and unhappy affiliates.

The extension will end on May 31, but because of contractual obligations, no commissions will be paid after that date. However, it would be a good idea to make all your changes before May 24th because there is a 7 day cookie set on any traffic sent to eBay. So to avoid losing commissions from clicks in May that end up converting in June, it’s best to get er’ done before the 24th.

It’s good to get a little leeway, but if you are an eBay affiliate don’t let it go too long and end up against the wall at the end of May. I was planning on finishing up everything by Wednesday, so maybe I’ll extend that to Friday. It’s best to stick with your original plans as close as possible.

Sunday’s Thoughts – What Are You Paying For That’s Free?

Albert Einstein has always intrigued me because he was just as much a philosopher as he was a scientist. Consequently I’ve borrowed one of his quotes for this Sunday’s thought of the day.

“Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing.”

A couple of months ago I was talking a morning walk and was a bit frustrated with the way things were going with my affiliate businesses, thinking how hard I’ve worked on many different things and the sometimes less than desirable results. As I walk, I occasionally like to kick rocks, acorns or what ever rolls well just to see how far they go. This particular morning I couldn’t connect with the acorns and my kicking effort ended in frustration as I seemed to be topping every one and watched them roll about 3 feet in front of me.

After 4 or 5 attempts to kick game winning 70 yard field goals, my acorn kicking desire waned and I continued on around our neighborhood cul-de-sac. As I passed nearly the same spot as my latest failed 3 pointer, my left foot (I’m right footed) connected perfectly with an acorn and it rolled out about 30 to 40 feet in front of me as if it were making a statement. After telling my wife about this little encounter, when either of us is struggling with striving too hard towards a target now, one will jokingly say to the other, “Let the acorn kick the foot.”

No effort and no payment had produced the greatest result.

Are you working hard and paying a big price for something you could get for free?

Win 10,000 Entrecard Credits From John Chow

I’m souring on Entrecard as of late because it consumes an inordinate amount of time in relation to the actual benefits it provides. But, if you want to take earning credits by mindless card dropping out of the equation and save some time, then head over to John Chow’s blog for a chance to win $10,000 Entrecard credits he is giving away.

John has managed to accumulate more than 18,000 credits and is giving away 10,000 of them. Bloggers like John who get around 5,000 to 6,000 visitors a day have no trouble earning a huge amount of Entrecard credits, because everyone wants to drop their card on John and everyone wants to advertise on his blog. But those of us that don’t get quite the amount of traffic the Dot Com Mogul does have to mindlessly drop cards to earn lots of credits.

Entrecard does have it’s advantages in that if you earn enough credits, you can eventually advertise on high profile blogs like John’s or Problogger of which I just submitted an advertising request at 2,048 credits. This does allow those that don’t have a very big advertising budget to get some great exposure, but you have to work quite hard for only a singe day’s worth of advertising. This has been my biggest beef with Entrecard, the fact that your advertising on any one blog lasts a scant 24 hours. You can see my Massive Entrecard Advertising Experiment Results for more on how much time Entrecard consumes for the benefit it provides.

Okay, I’m off my rant now. So, if you want to avoid a lot of work earning credits and would like a chance to win 10,000 credits for free, check out John’s contest.
