How Many Web Sites Do You Have?

Are You Building An Internet Empire? After publishing my March Affiliate Income Report I had 2 questions asking how many web sites I earned that income from and more specifically how many active sites I earned my Adsense income from. I had been thinking about doing a post reporting on this, but the questions prompted me to go ahead and do it.

So let’s get right to it. My over $1,300 Adsense income was earned from 16 active web sites or blogs, the top site earning a respectable $482.99 and the lowest earning site coming in at a meager 53 cents. But beyond that I have a lot more sites and blogs that earn a little money here and there.

My internet empire, if you want to call it that, consists of 31 domains, 11 subdomains, 7 Blogger blogs and 6 Squidoo lenses that I am actively making money from, holding as domains for possible resale or redirecting to other sites. There are also several more Blogger blogs and Squidoo lenses that I don’t update any longer and no longer earn anything from. Many are left over from the days that ran a somewhat spammy Blogger network.

Of all those internet properties, I actively keep up with 18 web sites, 14 blogs and those 6 Squidoo lenses to some extent. Needless to say, things are a bit crazy and quite busy most of the time around our home office. I have been trying to look at things this year more closely to see what are the top money makers and have been spending most of my time with this blog, my 10 Build A Niche Stores, 2 other web sites and 2 additional blogs. And of course there are always more ideas on the table and in some stage of development on paper or in my brain just waiting for the right moment. I am however, actively trying to focus on the top earning sites or the ones with the most potential.

Now, I get lots of comments and see lots of internet marketers exclaiming how they don’t make enough with Adsense or their affiliate programs. In all honesty, it’s probably because you either aren’t doing enough, or you aren’t doing enough of the right things. Trying to scratch out a living by writing a single blog more than likely won’t get you very far. Yes, internet marketers like John Chow make $30,000 per month just from blogging, but John had an internet empire and knew what he was talking about long before he wrote his first blog post.

Diversifying your affiliate marketing efforts are important for 2 reasons, one is that you have to find what works best for you, and secondly, you have to have enough going on that when one effort is a little slow or just being built, you can be earning in another area. If you keep exploring and taking advantage of opportunities, you will be plesently suprised where you end up 3 or 4 years from now.

  1. Yeah I diversify a lot when I’m trying to make money online but one thing I need to work on is follow through and consistency.

I’m trying to develop things that will last the test of time & I have 2 sites that I’m working on right now.

Have you ever thought about building an email list or are you sticking with RSS?

  2. I couldn’t agree more with your post. I actually run quite a few sites myself, although, like you I’m trying to spend this year on the ones that are actually making me money. Most of my sites aren’t, so it might be time to cut them loose!

  3. Alex – I have email lists with soome other sites I’m doing, but with my blog I’m just going to stick with RSS. I post every day so that’s my newsletter so to speak.

Ashley – Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Right now, I own 1 website and have 3 articles on Qassia that earn me a few dollars in Adsense. I’ve got some ideas in my head that I want to develop, but I don’t have the extra time right now to dedicate to them.

  5. Thanks for the post Alan, as I think I was one of those people who was asking your about how many websites you own. I actually have a few websites myself at this point. I’m constantly experimenting, trying new things and seeing what works for me. I just like learning from people who are more experienced than myself, and seeing what they do. Thanks for sharing :)

  6. Alan – Great post!

As many who read my own jibberish already know, I have about 150-170 actual live sites. Of those, roughly 50% are BANS and the rest are made up of a little bit of everything else! I also have about 300-350 completely undeveloped or parked domains just waiting in the wings for me to actually make time to do something with them.

The one thing I have found, which holds true with most efforts, is that 80% of my online income comes from less than 20% of my sites. In other words, I have a small percentage that perform exceptionally well… and the rest, while not failures by any means, are just kind of there to give me more to do! :-)

One of my efforts over the past 30-45 days is replicating the markets that are GREAT performers. Find the key things that make them different… and replicate that process acorss another 10 domains, to get 2-3 more winners.

  7. Wow … that’s a handful, I manage and am trying to build about 3 websites and just started up a blog …

This is apart from my landing pages from my pay per click campaigns…

I think there comes a point when you need to cut what is draining your time, and focus and what is bringing in a profit.

  8. Wow Mark, I thought I was busy. You probably don’t have any free time. I can’t imagine what I’d do with that many sites.

I’m concentrating on my 10 BANS sites in the next few months to see if I can really get a boost in income here.

  9. Wow, sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Tons of sites to manage. I think any blogger should be happy with their normal income. Looking for 30k a month is unrealistic, but 2k a month is enough to live a nice life, especially from just blogging a few hours a day.

  10. Currently I’m only maintaining one.

BTW nice blog you have can I do a review about this blog?

  11. Adsense is never a luck for me.
I am with adsense since 2 years and have made $200 till now. :(

  12. I own 3 site, But only little money earn from adsense.

  13. I’m still in little league compared to you guys. I have only about two sites, one blog and three domains

  14. I think the key point of the article would be how many sites are making you money every month? I have way to many domains sitting around waiting for development (some are parked earning their reg fees). Everyone’s focus should be on developing a few more sites every month that make money.

  15. SEO hosting,

True, the domains that make money are afterall, the important ones.

  16. I have about 15 blogs. Most of my earnings are from adsense

  17. I own a couple hundred domains these days, but only 12 of those sites earn $XXX+. I know I probably don’t need as many sites as I have, but it’s a lot of fun and you never know which ones are going to jump out and become profitable.

  18. You have a pretty large empire. I am just starting out only a handful of sites.

  19. wow. how you manage all that websites? 😉 I have only one. But it’s just beginning.

  20. hi there alan,you owned 31 sites?

    are they mostly bans site?

and blogging,i have some too but i just cant catch up.

    how do you catch up?

  21. rien,

I just installed another BANS site yesterday brining the total to 39 sites.

I’ll probably never catch up, but I do use Elance.com to hire people to write content for me:

  22. Alan, you have many sites to make the income you just reported.Do you think that 1 site can make 4 figure per month, i.e like how many visitors per day, alexa rank, and SEO things. Please advice.Thansk in advance

  23. Ari,

That’s a tough question since so many variables go into what makes your site profitable. Sure, I definitely think one site can earn you quite a bit, it just depends what niche you’re in. One of my BANS sites has earned me $1,000 per month at times.
