Sunday’s Thoughts – Are You Doing What’s Required?

I came across a brilliant quote from Winston Churchill and thought I’d share it for this Sunday’s though.

“It’s not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what’s required.”

Have you ever worked your tail off and not seen the results and then you’re disappointed because you thought you did your best? If you’re involved in any kind of internet marketing the answer I’m sure, is yes.

But maybe what you were doing was more fun, than it was necessary. There are many things I enjoy doing for my online businesses and yet some things that are required, I’m not that fond of. When I sold stuff on eBay, I despised having to package the things I was selling because it took so much time, but obviously, packaging was required if the customer’s merchandise were to arrive undamaged.

Are you giving your best to the fun things, but avoiding the required?

Your thoughts?

  1. That is probably 1 of the biggest problems in running a business-it isn’t all fun. I think this also relates closely to time management also.

  2. I recently launched a BANS site forcusing on designer shoes… Spent 2 days making it BANS with a blog incorporated… Nice layout, nice template etc.,..

BUT… I have still not marketed it according to my own schedule even!!

I can relate to exactly what you are saying. It is easier and more of a fun time doing the things you like versus the things you SHOULD be doing!

    Great post!

  3. Yeah, sometimes I go for the quick an easy things before the tasks I know are necessary. But, that’s one of my faults.

  4. Thanks Mark. I have a few BANS sites that I need to get on the ball with and get them marketed like I need to.

  5. I would say I do both. I do a lot of things for myself, and for my site. On the other hand, I spend about 2 hours of my day posting on other blogs, entrecard, site hopping, and social networks. I would like to just post every day and be done with it, but to get the extra traffic it is required that I spend 2 hours getting my content out there.

  6. I understand exactly what you are saying, especially about Ebay. I’m still selling things because it is income I can use to keep things going, BUT, going through the motions is more a pain than it is worth, or so I think. Then, I find the links I have on my about me page brings in results and I realize all those little mundane things we hate doing are really worth it and eventually pay off. Just my opinion.

  7. The mundane things that are necessary to run our business are best done at times of the day when you can do them on autopilot. For example, I sell some stuffon ebay so I do posting in one big batch once per week and my wife helps me. We do it on Friday afternoon when all the other things that need more brain power are done. My auction listings give a handling time and even doing this find most items are arrive to the buyer within the promised 5 business days. I get great feedback for my delievry times.
