Super Secret Project Revealed – I Won A Macbook Air

I won a Macbook AirI’ve been teasing everyone for about a month now as to the super secret project I’ve been working on and the results are finally in. What is it? What’s the big deal?

I’m surprised no one figured it out because I’ve blogged about it 6 times here at Affiliate Confession. I just received notice that I was one of the winners in the Webmaster Talk forums contest where 5 fortunate contestants received a prize package valued at $5,000 and one of the prizes in that pack was a brand new Macbook Air!

What made this contest different than many other contests run on the web was that although you received points for performing certain actions, instead of receiving more chances or entries as you earned points, your points were cumulative and the top 5 people with the most points were to be the winners. Contestants could earn anywhere from 2 to 200 points for various actions ranging from posting to the forums, writing articles and various things in between. My strategy was to maximize the chances of winning by writing a ton of articles and I managed to amass a total of 8,548 points bringing me in at the number 5 slot, only 36 points in front of the number 6 slot. The contest ran for 33 days so there was plenty of time to earn all the points you wanted by just working at it.

I’ll write another post later in the week detailing more of my strategy for winning the contest and what I did to almost assure a place in the top 5 winners. So the secret is out, that’s what I’ve been working on so diligently for the last month. However, now it’s time to get back into the swing of things again and get some real work done. More on the contest later.

  1. nice one!

  2. Thanks Lisa!

  3. Uh… a… Macintosh??? Oh, boy. I guess it’s all over, folks. Close up shop. Go home and tell your children that you love them. Alan is going to become an Apple fanboy. This blog will transform in a matter of months, I predict, into why an Apple is the greatest computer ever invented – ever. Even greater than computers of the future (unless of course, they too are Apples). Even greater than a Cray Supercomputer. Even greater than God.

Sigh… I should have seen this coming.

Seriously, congrats Alan. Now, I hope you see why spending your time on THAT was far more rewarding than your servitude to that Marketing firm. Did they give you an Apple MacBook? I think not.

Now, you can finally get out and come work with me. I’m at our super-secret underground bunker even now… smelling those delicious grilled burgers and fries… mixed with a bit of Iced Chai Tea…. and …. lentils??? Wha? Who ordered another one?!?! Grrrr……

Now, maybe you can sell all that crappy schwag on eBay and buy yourself, oh, let’s see…. just for starters…. an external laser mouse (I recommend the VX Revolution from Logitech), a carrying case (don’t get one of those lame messenger bags – puh-lease!), an external CD-Rom for loading apps (since the Air doesn’t have one), a power-supply protector for sketchy coffee shop power outlets (and FPL’s quality service), an extension cord, an external USB hard-drive for backups/issues, an extra ethernet cable for various offices that *still* don’t have wi-fi, and a few other random bits and pieces.

That should add about $350 to your “expenses” this month, and about 18 pounds to that 3 pound notebook.

    Congrats!

P.S. Yeah, I’m jealous. So what? Don’t I deserve to be? But I’m going to buy BANS so then I’ll have something official to complain about if I don’t become rich enough within months to buy about 8 of those MacBook Airs. You can’t complain if you don’t participate. Isn’t that what all those snarky voter registration folks from the League of Women Voters are always saying?

  4. Very nice! Congrats man! You deserve it!

  5. Thanks Jonathan, I can’t wait till my Macbook arrives!

  6. Wow, awesome…. I should have entered :(

  7. Zac,

I’m kind of surprised that the contest didn’t get more coverage than it did. Shoemoney wrote a post about it, but I didn’t see it get mentioned on many other major blogs. I was fortunately able to take advantage of that.

  8. *lol* I’m so pathetic- I just want an iBook because they’re shaped like apples. The Air is shaped like a normal laptop. Ptth.

    :) Seriously, though. Congrats.

  9. I would consider that time well spent.

  10. This is interesting, I’m looking forward to seeing your strategies. Just got yourself a new subscriber!

  11. This is thin laptop ,man.Planning to have one this year.

  12. Congrats Alan.. Well done job there. I ended with 9th place, it would have been really nice if the next 5 after the top 5 also got something to win.. Lol.

  13. Geez, this Salberg guy totally rains on every blog post. Kind of like Debbie Downer.

Alan, congrats on the Macbook Air. What a sweet take.
