Business Goals For The New Year 2009

Another year passes us by and new opportunity is always around the corner so it’s time to set some goals for 2009. Unfortunately the year ended on the downside income wise with not even being able to get close to the $10,000 earnings goal I had set for December. Thanks to what’s going to be a less than stellar month from eBay and Google completely shutting me down on the content network for the last 2 weeks (more about that in a post later) income is way off from what I had projected. If you haven’t figured it out by now, that’s just the way it goes with affiliate marketing and the only thing you can do is continue to press on.

With the volatile nature of affiliate marketing I’ve decided to make some some significant changes in the way I’m going to do business this year. The things that have generated a steady income for me over the years will be where I’ll be spending a majority of my time in 2009. Gone will be much of the experimental things I’ve been doing with PPC and many of the weight loss, diet type offers I’ve been toying around with. I don’t believe green tea and acai berry pills and potions are a legitimate way to lose weight and stay healthy, so what the heck am I trying to sell that garbage for?

On the plus side I’ve found a few CPA offers that seem to work very well and are good solid, legitimate products and I’ll continue to work with those and look for more like them. But PPC is not where I’ll be spending the bulk of my time. The three main areas of business I’ll be working on in 2009 are as follows:

Travel Sites– This is where the bulk of my Adsense income has come from for the last 4 years and it’s time to seriously expand this part of my business. Right now I have 1 travel site and 1 travel blog that brings in 85% of my roughly $1,200 to $1,500 per month Adsense income. My initial goal is to double the Adsense income or bring it to a steady $3,000 per month and increase TripAdvisor income to $1,000 per month.

This will be accomplished by adding a blog to my travel site (which I’ve already done) and outsourcing content for both article marketing and adding new pages to these sites. I’ve outsourced content writing before, but this will be on a much larger scale and plan to pay for some 20 to 30 articles a month and possibly double that when I get a good system going. There also may be another travel site going online depending on how quickly I cab increase Adsense income.

Healthy Eating Sites and Blogs – This is really the core of our belief in what’s going to make a difference in your health and I need to be putting much more time into writing content and blogging about what were doing around our home and yard to make this a reality. We’re transforming our yard into a mini farm and I’ve hardly written about this at all. And with the the way the economy is going, I can see a lot of people heading in this direction.

My initial goal in this area is to do 2 to 3 blog posts a week about nutrition and add 2 pages of content a week to our healthy diet site.

Attitude Adjustment– I’ve had to ask myself if I really have the mind of an internet entrepreneur and have come to the conclusion I need a new attitude for a new year. I spend way too much time fretting about Google, losing money with pay per click marketing, dwindling revenue, CPA offers not converting, checking stats and on, and on. I also tend to be way to negative and that attitude just has to go.

Things are going to be way different in 2009 with the way the economy is going it will require extraordinary thinking and innovation. There is always opportunity regardless of what happens and it just takes a little more thinking outside of the normal way of doing things to be creative and to find out what works and what doesn’t. Time to stop sweating the small stuff and see a much bigger picture.

So, my initial goal is to bring Adsense income to a steady $3,000 per month, get TripAdvisor to $1,000 per month and earn $1,000 from all other sources including eBay, through PPC and all other sources giving me a solid $5,000 per month. When that goal is realized hopefully in 6 to 9 months, I’ll start working on doubling it.

Are you ready for 2009? What are your goals?

  1. Great list of goals, it’s nice to see what niches you are into.

You can read my internet related goals at http://www.improvingtheweb.com

  2. Thanks for sharing your goals with your readers. It nice to see someone lay the cards out on the table.

I really wanted to tell you how much I like your “healthy diet” site. It is really nicely done. I recently found your blog and you are certainly in my Google Reader.

Wishing you the best in 2009.

  3. Good stuff, good luck with all your ventures. I too am looking at what is working and what is not, will evaluate and look for more profitable strategies for 2009! Happy New Year Alan!

  4. No worries dude, when you aim higher than you expect you will probably get what you want. Judging from the goals that you set, I believe its achieveable and I wish you luck at them!

  5. That is really sky high for me. I’m going for four figures only (monthly) now. Wish you all the best in reaching your target.

  6. does tripadvisor site belong to you?

  7. My goal for 2009 is to quit work and work full time at home, 2008 was a solid foundation for this goal and i hope i can hit this goal within 9 months.

  8. I am with you on this new thinking for 2009. It seems that we all tend to want to try new things, always hoping one thing will do better than the last. Also, with the economy the way it is, other people will have to think differently as well. I like the idea of you turning your yard into a market garden, ideal for both saving money and healthy eating. This would be a good plan all around for others to follow. Well done.

  9. I learned a lot during 2008, even though I have been online marketing since 2001. There are always changes that need to be applied to keep up with the times.

I am dropping about 6 blogs in 2009 but I will replace them with other blogs that I think will do better. A few of the topics I chose just didn’t do what I expected.

Plus I am trying a few new things this year.

    Happy 2009

  10. I would like to increase my earnings to 5 figure monthly from blogging. That is my goal.

  11. Thanks for that candid post, and best wishes on achieving your $$ goals in ’09.

Interested in hearing about the Google & Ebay problems you referenced.

  12. Omar,

Thanks for your encouragement on the healthy diet site and thanks for subscribing.

  13. Paull,

I like to think that “new idea” is always the one that’s going to be the big score, but this year I’m going to be focusing on the basics and the core of what my wife and I already do in the way of healthy eating.

It doesn’t mean that I won’t be open to an opportunity if it should present itself, I just have to be a little more discerning this year.

  14. I’m so glad you’re honest; and I really like the back to basics approach. I keep thinking my ideas aren’t big enough but slowly but surely am starting to figure out the ideas I do for me because I want/need it are the same thing others want/need. Simple… now to just publish it.

  15. Its great that you are open and honest about your achievements so far and goals for the future. You already seem to be very positive so far! I intend to start up a few more content based websites and maybe a blog or two then montise them with Adsense and affiliate marketing.

  16. Alan, I like what your articles about and your report to readers is very honest and sincere not a bombastic type like magazine rumours.I think I have learn many things from you, being blogged and blogging two ways and making comments to other blog that have reputations can bring good organic search engine.Keep up the good work bro!!

  17. Hi Alan happy new year!

Long time reader first time commenter.

I have been wondering how many sites do you have these days in total you build for online money? Have you been building new sites to your arsenal and if not why? Are you only building your current sites to catch more keywords and get authority with link building?

My goals are first to reach the 1k month range and then continue all the way to 10k monthly profit. Don’t have much time to do this online marketing so I know it’s going to take time. After that I can stop working so hard and travel with the family.

  18. Everyone keeps telling me that I should set goals but I just can’t bring myself to doing it, mainly because I don’t believe setting myself a goal will improve on anything that I do. Maybe I’m wrong, but I can’t see myself changing anytime soon.

In regards to your sites, are they general sites or do they concentrate on a particular country?

  19. Alan, I’m disappointed you are giving up on PPC for the most part. I’ve followed your blog and well all I can say is that you have made me a lot of money with affiliate marketing.

The azoogleads dating offer you ran on facebook I decided to run and was making 1k/day net.

The poll campaign you ran…well, I ran a similiar political poll campaign because I read your blog and I learned how to do poll campaigns and made 20k net off of it around the election.

You are not far from where you need to be to make it as PPC marketer…you just have to tweak a few things here and there.

Best of luck to you in 2009…

  20. Sami,

    See this post:
At this point the only new sites I will be building are to complement sites I already have. I need to work on what’s already going.

All my sites are US based.

Those are some sweet payoffs. I’m not giving up on PPC, just being way more selective in what I do.

  21. Good goals for the new year! Im also going after more content based income. I think adsense seems to be more sustainable then CPA as it always seems to be a constant battle with Google

  22. how to make money,

No, unfortunately TripAdvisor doesn’t belong to me. If it did, I’d be a millioniare.

  23. That makes sense considering the population f the States. It would make it a bit harder for me as Australia has a long way to go before it get’s to be the size of the US.

  24. Alan;

Is there a reason you don’t give out the URL for your travel sites? I understand if you don’t want us to make the connection, but I’d be curious to see them and I think it would be helpful for people reading your blog to see them. I looked at your healthy eating site and it adds a layer of texture to the blog posts when you talk about them.

  25. @ Alan, I was actually wondering the same thing.

  26. Ashley,

I just make it a policy to not give away everything I do. I’ve had people copy too much of my work and I’m just trying to limit some of the mischief.

  27. That makes perfect sense. Thanks so much for the reply. Also, you will have to pardon my last comment as it was actually aimed at Ashley and not Alan. Must be my fried brain cells coming through.

  28. Human plans, God decided

  29. Your healthy eating site sounds very interesting. Organic foods, unprocessed foods, and similar efforts to return to healthy eating is becoming increasingly popular. Great idea for a site.

Some would say that it’s difficult to monetize a food site because food can’t be sold effectively over the internet. However, I see that you have tapped into people’s interest in health books, equipment for foods (like a juicer), and health-related foods that can easily be ordered online like energy bars and flax seed oil. I am impressed with the site. Well done!

  30. Good bless you!

  31. I had no idea that travel sites could be so lucrative. Speaking of that, have you heard that Tourism Queensland in Australia is offering the “best job in the world?” The government agency is offering $100,000 (dollar equivalent) for a luxurious six months there living and blogging about it. The duties, according to the job posting for Island Caretaker Great Barrier Reef, include living in a swank three bedroom house on luxurious Hamilton Island, spending your days diving, sailing, and bushwacking . . . then blog about it once in a while. Apply here: http://www.islandreefjob.com/

  32. I could not believe my eyes when I read your post about the “Best Job in the World!” I clicked on the link you provided and I know I must have sat there for 5 minutes, reading it and wishing it was me. What a Dream Job for sure!!! I forwarded the link to all of my personal contacts.

    Thanks for sharing. :-)

  33. Thanks for the tips.

And telling us some of your niches :)

  34. i just can hope your goals will be reached.
and i also can do what you hoped 😀

  35. Those sound like excellent goals for the new year. You’re right, opportunities always present themselves when you think outside of the box and can be a little creative. My main goal for 2009? Well, I’d like to make more money online. Best of luck with your goals. I’m sure you’ll achieve them. Keep us posted.

  36. Business Ideas actually comes from basic needs o human, I won’t elaborate on methods or systems complexity.Just simple business that ventures semi offline and online.Where I have real estate and property site only within Indonesian territory, but it’s something to work for and can get real sales potentials
